rollers can be used to paint large, flat surfaces in much less time than it would take using a paintbrush. your choice of roller cover depends on the type of paint (latex or oil) and the surface you're painting (smooth, rough or textured).
re: stain hollow core 6 panel doors? i agree with everyone on the painted/stained combination. if they are the hollow doors with the faux wood grain, you can use a heavy body stain to rub into the primer. leave some in the faux grain, let them dry then poly them. this process is best done with the doors laying flat.

stain probably costs a little bit more. not a big price difference for materials. paint takes a minimum of 2 coats - 1 primer, 1 enamel - 2nd coat of enamel makes for a superior job. stain requires 1 coat of stain and minimum 2 coats of poly/varnish, again a 3rd coat of poly will make for a better job.
